September 2018 Cleanup Event Held on Buzovna Beach

On September 16, IDEA, "Tamiz Shahar" JSC and Azerbaijan Youth Foundation held the annual after-beach-season coastal cleanup event.

Coinciding with the 2018 World Beach Cleanup Day, over 300 eager volunteers, including the young people from Sabunchu and Khazar Youth Centers, turned up once again at one of Baku’s dirtiest beaches – Buzovna - and helped to clean it and raise awareness on marine pollution.

Having become the 10th cleanup event organized on the Caspian coast, it aimed to raise public awareness in preventing pollution and call everyone to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time.

Equipped with all the necessary sanitary tools and supported by special waste collecting machines, participants cleaned up the polluted plot of the shoreline. Together, they have been able to remove huge amounts of trash, which was afterwards sent to the Balakhani Solid Waste Sorting Plant for recycling.

Following the cleanup, participants enjoyed the fun music while playing football, volleyball and badminton on the clean beach and winning prizes in interactive games and competitions.

As part of its marine environment protection efforts, IDEA attaches special attention to the water quality improvement both in the Caspian Sea and in internal waters. Traditionally, IDEA organizes series of similar beach and river cleanups with its local and international partners, attracting more and more public support each time. As a result of these cleanups, conducted under the “Let’s keep our coasts clean!” slogan each year, volunteers have cleaned up nearly 50 tons of trash from the coast of the Caspian Sea in the past six years.

The organizers of the June 2018 cleanup express their gratitude to all participants who took part in the event and contributed to the global fight against the environmental problems.
