Orchards Planted for Low-Income Families in Agjabadi and Barda
On April 17 and 18, orchards were planted for low-income families in the Agjabadi and Barda regions through a joint initiative of IDEA Public Union, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
During the tree-planting events, 1,000 pomegranate trees were planted across 2 hectares in each district. These orchards were divided among low-income families living in the areas, including the families of martyrs, and given to them for free use. By tending to these orchards, families will have the opportunity to generate income and improve their financial well-being.
The pilot project for planting fruit trees was initiated by Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Founder and Head of IDEA Public Union, and Goodwill Ambassador of the FAO, in April 2017. Under the project, the first orchard was established in Ismayilli, followed by others in Shamkir, Agstafa, Tovuz, Agdash, Gakh, Lankaran, Beylagan, and Sabirabad regions, benefiting low-income families, including the families of Karabakh war veterans and martyrs.
The socio-economic importance of the project lies in its contribution to improving the well-being of the population and reducing the country’s dependence on imported agricultural goods.
The project has planted approximately 13,000 fruit trees, including hazelnut, pomegranate, apricot, feijoa, and date varieties, and has provided 38 low-income families with orchards.
Tree planting actions are scheduled for October-November in Imishli, Gazakh, Gabala, Goygol, Lerik, and Guba regions and will continue in other regions of the country in the future.
It is noteworthy that 400 local young people volunteered to participate in the tree-planting events in Agjabadi and Barda regions. IDEA extends its gratitude to all the volunteers and supporting institutions for their commitment to the environment.
