In Azerbaijan, the Earth Hour 2017 Environmental Campaign was Held
On March 25, Baku hosted a large-scale event against climate change as part of the Earth Hour 2017 international campaign. The event was organized jointly by the IDEA Public Union, the official coordinator of the Earth Hour international campaign in Azerbaijan, and the World Wildlife Fund's Azerbaijan office (WWF Azerbaijan).
Participants gathered in front of the Heydar Aliyev Center, a rare architectural gem of world architecture, to observe the process of turning off the lights on the facades of major buildings in the central part of the city for one hour. They also took part in lighting up the campaign's symbol "60+" with candles during a symbolic countdown and in a bicycle ride.
The Earth Hour campaign, held under the slogan "Shine a light on climate action," featured unusual dance performances by popular dance groups in line with the "Earth Hour" concept, fun Zumba master classes, continuous music throughout the event, and other surprises that captivated the youth.
Earth Hour is the largest global movement dedicated to the environment, mobilizing millions of people to combat climate change. Started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, as a lights-out event, the "Earth Hour" campaign was observed in 178 countries, 7,000 cities, and even the International Space Station in 2016. During Earth Hour events, the lights on the facades of famous buildings in major cities are turned off for one hour at 8:30 p.m. local time. Participants use this symbolic action to draw public attention to the dangers of climate change and promote energy conservation.
IDEA Public Union, the official coordinator of the international Earth Hour 2017 campaign in Azerbaijan, expresses its gratitude to the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Heydar Aliyev Center, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Baku City Executive Authority, the "Icherisheher" State Historical and Architectural Reserve Administration, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan, the Baku Boulevard Administration, the Baku Olympic Stadium, "Baku Crystall Hall," the National Gymnastics Arena, the Gabala "ASAN service" center, ADA University, the "Flame Towers" complex, "Dalga Plaza," "Gilan Holding," and "Yeni Hayat Şirkətlər Qrupu" MMC for their participation in this year's "Earth Hour" campaign.
Considering the seriousness of the climate change threat and the importance of combating it for humanity, IDEA Public Union urges everyone to contribute to solving this problem by saving energy and avoiding wastefulness.
