Fruit Orchards Established for Low-Income Families in Aghstafa and Tovuz

On October 27, through a joint initiative of the IDEA Public Union, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the “Regional Development” Public Union of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, and the “Cavan” Youth Movement Public Union, fruit orchards were established for low-income families in the Aghstafa and Tovuz districts.

During the tree-planting actions organized, 1000 persimmon trees were planted on a 2-hectare plot allocated by the Aghstafa district executive authority, and 1248 hazelnut trees were planted on a 2-hectare plot allocated by the Tovuz district executive authority. The planted orchards were distributed among low-income families and families of martyrs living in these districts and given to them for free use. Low-income families will have the opportunity to care for these orchards, harvest produce, earn income, and improve their material well-being.

The establishment of fruit orchards for low-income families will be organized in November in the Gakh, Sabirabad, Beylagan, Lankaran, and Agdash districts, and in the future, in other regions of the country. In the initial phase of the project, the planting of approximately 9,000 fruit trees, including varieties such as hazelnut, pomegranate, apricot, feijoa, and persimmon, is planned.

The socio-economic significance of the project is that establishing such orchards will improve the population's welfare and reduce the country's dependence on imported agricultural products.

It should be noted that the pilot project for planting fruit trees was launched in April 2017 on the initiative of the Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, founder and head of the IDEA Public Union, and the FAO Goodwill Ambassador, Leyla Aliyeva. Within the project framework, the first orchard was established in Ismayilli and then in the Shamkir district, provided for the free use of low-income families, including veterans of the Karabakh war and families of
