A Clean-up Campaign Held on the Occasion of World Environment Day 2021
On June 5, with the opening of the beach season, the next traditional coastal clean-up campaign was organized by IDEA Public Union, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Azerbaijan Youth Foundation, and “Tamiz Shahar” OJSC.
The clean-up event dedicated to World Environment Day was held in the area of the Shuvalan beach. The clean-up campaign, conducted under the slogan "Let the Coasts Stay Clean," is the 16th campaign with the participation of young people on the Caspian Sea coasts.
The main goal of the event is to promote cleanliness on the sea shores, prevent coastal areas from being polluted with household waste, and engage all young people in the fight to protect the marine environment.
During the event, the participants equipped with necessary sanitary equipment sorted the collected waste and identified the most common litter found on the beaches. Special equipment was also brought in to make the waste collection process more efficient. Later, all waste was delivered to the Balakhani Solid Waste Sorting Plant.
It should be noted that on the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and founder and head of IDEA Public Union, public beaches have been created in our capital to clean and improve neglected coastal areas, create the necessary conditions for people's comfortable rest, improve public health and hygiene, and promote ecological and social responsibility. A total of 6 public beaches have been made available for public use in the areas of Shikh, Goradil, Novkhani, Buzovna, Pirshagi, and Sahil settlements. These beaches are equipped with seating and sanitary facilities for people to enjoy a clean and safe environment completely free of charge, and they include football and volleyball fields, trash bins, a rescue station from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and a sufficient number of umbrellas, changing rooms, showers, restrooms, and gazebos according to demand.
Taking into account that this year's World Environment Day is dedicated to the theme of "Ecosystem Restoration," IDEA Public Union called on everyone to unite for the well-being of current and future generations:
“We cannot turn back time, but we can plant trees, green our cities, restore our forests, eat healthy food, and clean our coasts. We are a generation that can live in harmony with nature. Let's be proactive for the future, not worried! Let's be bold for our nature, not shy! Let's unite for our planet and treat the gifts that nature gives us with sensitivity!”
